Guide to Good Food, 2016

By Regina M. Connell.

Every minute, every day, every year, there are new artisan food producers. They all have good claims. They all appeal to the “buy from the small/buy local/buy from the cool guy who was once an investment banker just like me/wow what a great story” instinct in us.

But, if you’re buying at anything other than a farmer’s-type market where you can taste before you buy, you don’t know. Let me repeat: You. Just. Don’t. Know. And so you spend your money, you eat the food, and you keep eating… because it’s good… Or more likely because It’s There. You don’t want to waste the food. You don’t want to waste the money. And you feel guilty.

Stop the madness. Don’t waste the time, the calories, the pleasure.

Vermont’s Shacksbury Cider: Winner of the Good Food Awards

The only way forward is to buy the stuff of life based on this list: The winners of the Good Food Awards (in the current year and previous years, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012.) The 2016 categories sound like the things that make life better: beer, charcuterie, cheese, chocolate, cider, coffee, confections, honey, oils, condiments, pickles, preserves, and spirits.

We’re huge fans. As they say themselves, “The Good Food Awards celebrate the kind of food we all want to eat: tasty, authentic and responsibly produced. We grant awards to outstanding American food producers and the farmers who provide their ingredients.” Sounds worthwhile to us, and we can vouch for the winners.

OR shop from members of the Good Food Mercantile retailers of Good Food, who specialize in the good stuff. Because life’s just too short to eat bad food.
